World Breastfeeding Week

August 1-7

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is an international campaign that aims to raise awareness around, promote, and support breast/chestfeeding initiatives globally.

The 2024 theme for WBW is “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All” with efforts focusing on need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist.

The goal of WBW this year is to:

  • Inform people about inequalities that exist in breastfeeding support and prevalence

  • Anchor breastfeeding as an equaliser to close gaps within society

  • Engage with individuals and organisations to enhance collaboration and support for breastfeeding

  • Galvanize action on reducing inequalities in breastfeeding support by focusing on vulnerable groups

In order to reduce inequalities in breast/chestfeeding, some vulnerable parents may need additional support. As part of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action is focused on spotlighting Warm Chain of Breastfeeding efforts. The Warm Chain of Breastfeeding works with different stakeholders to coordinate efforts at all levels of care for the parent-child dyad. Below are the objectives of the Warm Chain of Support for Breastfeeding:

  • Protect the warm chain by developing strategies for collaboration and Conflict of Interest safeguards

  • Promote the warm chain approach and showcase good examples of linkages

  • Support the warm chain by coordinating training, technical support, and research to enhance knowledge and skills
