National WIC Breastfeeding Week
August 1-7
National WIC Breastfeeding Week recognizes and celebrates the contributions of the WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infant, and Children) program, created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week, this week aims to promote and support breastfeeding as the best source of nutrition for a baby.
WIC provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age 5 who are found to be at nutritional risk.
The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service launched the “Learn Together, Grown Together” campaign in August 2018. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to equip WIC families with the information, resources, and support needed to successfully breastfeed. The campaign provides support at every stage from learning, starting, overcoming, to thriving when it comes to breastfeeding.
